How to Find Meaning in Your Life

Searching

Human beings are engaged in a continual search to find meaning or purpose in their lives. This search can prove to be very frustrating as we’re not really sure what we’re looking for. As Robert Waldinger put it in in his newsletter, The Art of Living Well, “We’ve been conditioned to view purpose as something to be discovered in the future, as though there’s a predetermined calling with our name on it waiting to be found. But spiritual traditions remind us that meaning isn’t found—it’s made. Purpose isn’t discovered—it’s cultivated in the present moment.” The way we cultivate our sense of purpose is to ask ourselves questions like: Who needs a phone call or text now? Who needs a visit now? Who needs help or encouragement now? And then live out the answers to these questions now. This is how we cultivate meaning and purpose in our life. This is also what is meant by the phrase, “Let your light shine.”
