We Often Grow by Doing Things We Don’t Want to Do

Comfort Zone

It’s human nature to avoid doing things we don’t want to do; especially if those things lie outside our comfort zone. This is known as “taking the easy way out” and it can cause you to miss out on the richness of life that comes through growth. As 81-year-old author/speaker Joan Frances Moran put it, “You don’t always realize how much you give up for the sake of comfort. In fact, dedicating your life to the comfort zone is overrated. Instead of plunging into an exciting life experience, you retreat, step back, or run from what can be a transformative (life-changing) moment. In an effort to minimize your greatest fears, you could be sacrificing your heart’s deepest desires. In the name of comfort, you sacrifice potential.” So, the next time you’re confronted with an opportunity to step outside your comfort zone, go for it and then take stock of how you feel afterwards. I think you’ll be glad you did because you’ll find out that the comfort zone really is overrated.
