I have come across several articles that say kindness is a lost art. So, I decided to test this notion as I went about my daily business. That morning as I attempted to enter the freeway, a driver slowed down and let me cut in front of him. When I got to Lowe’s to buy an electrical extension cord, a woman from customer service walked over me to where they were rather than telling me which aisle they were in. Several times, motorists stopped as I approached cross-walks to let me pass. In the Trader Joe’s parking lot, a man who was pushing a shopping cart toward the store, asked a woman who had just finished unloading her groceries into her car, if he could push her cart back to the store as well. She smiled and said, “thank you” and they told each other to have a nice day. As I was getting ready to check out at Trader Joe’s, I notice that the lines were all long. At this point, a checker appeared, grabbed my cart and led me to her line which was open. Finally, that evening, my wife and I took my mother-in-law, who uses a walker, out to dinner. A customer who was leaving the restaurant, saw us coming and held the door for a least a minute waiting for us to enter the restaurant. I experienced additional acts of kindness that day, but I think you get the idea. There are a lot of kind people out there doing lots of kind things. If you look for them, you’ll see them. Kindness is not a lost art; it’s still alive and very well.
I agree, Ross. I see acts of kindness every day. Some are directed at me, like the guy who opened the door to a store for me as he was walking by; he wasn’t even going into that store! Others I take joy from watching, like the person setting out a bowl of water for a dog in the outdoor seating area of a restaurant. Kindness is all around. You’ll always see what you’re looking for. 🙂
Hi Lori!
It’s always nice to hear from you! I like your phrase: “You’ll always see what you’re looking for.” I couldn’t agree with you more. I hope all is well and that business is good! All the best to you, Ross
