People are almost dying to be on the receiving end of kind acts. As a result, they tend to remember the people who performed them. For example, I always try to extend some form of kindness to people in retail positions because they have to put up with so much inconsiderate behavior from the people they serve. One day as I was checking out at a supermarket, I asked the checker how her day was going. She responded with, “Wow! Somebody asking me how my day is going; now there’s a switch!” We then proceeded to have a very pleasant conversation, and she was smiling when I left. A month later, I was back at that same supermarket, and the check-out lines were very long. As I was trying to decide which line to stand in, that same clerk tapped me on the shoulder and said, “Follow me. I’ll open my register for you.” As I was thanking her for doing so, she looked at me and said, “We always remember the kind ones!”
