The following story was sent in by a subscriber. “I was in a bakery near my home. I asked the server to put some croissants, and a few other things into a box for me. When she handed me the box, I turned and saw an elderly lady behind me carrying several loaves of bread. I then asked the checker to include her bread on my bill. After I finished paying, the checker put the lady’s bread into a bag and handed it to her. The lady then asked me, ‘Did you just pay for me?’ When I told her yes, you should’ve seen her face! She smiled very brightly and hugged me for a long time, to the point that the checker thought we were old friends. The checker then asked, “Why did you pay her bill for her?” I said, ‘Didn’t you see the look on her face?’ That look has been stuck in my head for a long time and every so often I think of this incident and am reminded that making someone happy makes me happy too.”
