Everyone of us is motivated by the exact same thing. It’s something called self-interest–what’s in it for me. This is nothing new; we all know this. But here’s the big secret: nobody takes it seriously–99 percent of the people ignore this simple, obvious fact 99 percent of the time! If you want to get people excited about going the extra mile for you time and again, all you have to do is figure out their self-interest and connect it with yours. As Jean de La Bruyére once said, “The shortest and best way to make your fortune is to let people see clearly that it is in their best interest to promote yours.”
