As George Clooney accepted the award for Best Actor at the 17th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards for his role in the movie The Descendants, he said this was the life altering advice his father had given him.
If You’re Not Proud Of What You’re Doing, Then Do It Better Or Do Something Else
He then continued, “I have to say I am very proud of this film.” This is excellent advice to live by because if you’re not proud of what you’re doing, you’re not going to do it very well nor are you going to be happy doing it.
So, if you’re not proud of what you’re doing, you have two choices to improve your situation: either do it better to the point where you are proud of what you’re doing or switch to doing something that you’re proud of. Life is far too short not to take advantage of these choices.
While we were in Australia in 2010 we got some similar advice from our Aussie cousins. “Find what you want to do earlly in life and be good at it. If not be good at that”
Dear Windy,
Thank you so much for your comment. It’s so nice to hear from you. I hope our paths cross again soon. Ross
Ross: In teaching me the traditional work ethic, my Dad used similar words to this quote. He also taught me about “a days work for a days pay.” – which is why I didn’t get along well with the labor unions in Philadelphia and New York City.
On one of my first jobs as a youngster, I came home from work one day complaing about my job and my boss. My Dad told me to quit or learn to like it.
Dear Bob,
Your dad sounded like my dad. Thanks for the comments. See you tomorrow. Ross
I think sometimes, especially in this economy, people are not proud of where they are (to get a pay check) but they can still be proud of what they do–even though it is hard. If once you were an accountant but now you sling hamburgers at MacDonald’s, you can still be the best “hamburger slinger” there is. Sometimes, that can lead back to a better job. So, alwys do your best is my advice (although you didn’t ask for it) Ann
Dear Ann,
I love your advice because it’s always right on. Thank you so much for taking the time to email me. I hope all is well. All the best to you, Ross
