Cheating Has Never Been Part Of The Formula For Success

Cheating Never Leads to Success

The formula for success in business has always been pretty straight-forward: You out-work, out-hustle and out-innovate your competition to provide superior products, services and customer experiences.  These are the things that make business both fun and exciting.  Yet, there are a number of people who view cheating as some sort of short-cut to success.  They pass off second-rate goods to their customers as first-rate or they don’t report all of their income to the government for tax purposes or they bribe people in order to get their business.  There are several problems associated with cheating:  First, it compromises your integrity which means you no longer feel really good about yourself.  Second, it takes time and energy away from the true formula for success.  Finally, it eventually does catch up with you and when it does, the consequences can be dire.  Just ask Bernie Madoff or some of the executives from Enron who are currently sitting in prison.  So, do yourself a favor and treat “cheating” as a dirty word.  By sticking to your true self, you set yourself up for long term success. – Ross Reck

  1. Ross,
You hit the nail on the head… And it starts with personal integrity and responsibility. yes, you have to out-work, out-hustle and out innovate but if you consistently provide the products, services and experiences in a fair manner you really will win.. in the end.. and you feel so much better because you “treated your customer the way you would want to be treated”. I’ve seen what you describe so much in business, it’s a wonder some businesses stay in business. (and they’re not fun places to work at either!).

  2. I’ve been preaching!! the monetary value of virtue for years now – and it causes me to draw from a very small pool of ideal clients! Those who stay are serious about building real businesses. Cheating on one’s taxes, speeding, talking on one’s cell phone in CT while driving . . . the list goes on, and most people fail the saint test. The point where cheating and success start running on divergent paths is the point where the mind stops searching for methods that are genuinely competitive, and settles for the easy fix. What I’ve observed is the mindset that allows cheating to be a solution is the mindset that leads to making bad decisions in general. Lying, cheating, and stealing are all, almost always, the signs of laziness or cowardice. In fact most who cheat are too lazy to cheat properly. Doing a great job of cheating is just as hard as winning in any other way. It’s the laziness that gets them in the end.
