A Kind Act that Sparked a Family Tradition

A few years ago, one of my daughters was experiencing a lot of stress as many parents of young children do. My sister-in-law saw that she really needed a break and offered to take the kids for a Saturday afternoon. She could strike up a friendship with a total stranger instantly. She went on several river cruises in Europe with her husband. He told me that by the end of the first day of the cruise, she knew everyone on the boat. Whenever they walked into the dining room, people at numerous tables would wave them over to sit with them.

An article in the New York Times by David Brooks points out that many of us have a strong reluctance to talk to strangers; especially in places like airplanes, commuter trains, airports or when we’re standing in line. Some of the reasons for this include that we think it will be awkward, dull, trying and not at all enjoyable.
