Knowing Who You Are Enables You To Ignore Criticism

Available from Amazon.com

Rachael Ray recently interviewed Jennifer Lopez on her television talk show.  When Rachel asked Jennifer how she was able to deal with all the criticism that went along with being a star, she gave a very confident and impressive answer.  She said, “Know who you are, stay true to that and try to get better.”   Criticism only hurts if you’re not sure who you are or if you’re trying to be someone you’re not because in those situations you’re dependent on other people’s approval to feel good about yourself.  Knowing who you are, on the other hand, gives you the confidence to ignore the criticism of others because you’re not dependent on the approval of others to feel good about yourself.  Instead, you feel good about yourself simply because you feel good about who you are.

  1. Thanks for that, Ross. Lord knows I ain’t a star, but the timing of your sending reading this message is incredible. So true, so true, and it’s very difficult to remember when you’re outgunned. I have a little “what not” (when’s the last time you heard that term?) that states, “Your only obligation in any lifetime is to be true to yourself.” I hope that all is well with you and yours.

    • Dear Amelia,

It’s always great to hear from you. Thank you so much for the wonderful comment. I’m glad my reminder struck a chord. Things are fine. Working on a new book about a totally new idea. All the best to you, Ross

  2. I think celebreties have to develop a “thick skin”. It goes with the territory. Unfortunately, it often happens to us “other people” too. I think you have to have developed a sense of who you are, no matter what people are saying about you. Having a friend tell you that something could be improved should not be taken as criticism if it is in the form of a suggestion or a friendly remark, especially if one is asking for their opinion but it should never be done in a negative or hurtful way. A fine line there, I guess
