Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger is the retired U.S. Airways pilot who on January 15, 2009, successfully landed his Airbus A320 aircraft in the Hudson River after it hit a flock of large birds which disabled both engines. Recently he was the commencement speaker at Purdue University. His talk contained some very solid advice for living a successful life. “…continue to invest in yourselves, never stop learning, never stop growing, either professionally or personally….show up for your life, choose not to be a bystander, be present and celebrate every moment. None of us knows what tomorrow may bring….At the end of our lives, I think it’s unlikely that we will be counting our money or cataloguing the toys we have accumulated. Instead, we are probably going to ask ourselves a question: Did I make a difference. My wish for each of you is that the answer to that question will be yes.”

Without mentioning God or Jesus The Christ or any kind of religious reference, I feel Sully’s spirituality throughout his statement. Those of us who are believers know the right hand of God was under that plane the whole time, guiding it to safety. God blessed Sully with his knowledge and talent, and hundreds of people are alive and well today because of that grace. We are all here for a reason. It’s a pure modern day miracle when we get to witness it in action.

Great message. I agree 100%. Professionals have to take responsibility for their own professional develiopment and career. By investing the time to learn, participate, meet and interact with other professionals, we are acruing personal interest in our own future.
