If there’s one lesson I’ve learned in life, this is it. Over the years, a number of college athletic coaches have lost their jobs because they inflated their resumes with false claims about graduate degrees they had earned when, in fact, they hadn’t—they took the low road. It was the wrong thing to do, and they knew it, but their excuse was, “other coaches are doing it.” A few high-ranking military officers have done the same thing with regard to wearing ribbons and medals on their uniforms that they really didn’t earn—another example of taking the low road. When their lies were made public, their careers were over. The lesson is clear. If you want to list a master’s degree on your resume, take the high road and earn it. If you want to wear certain ribbons and medals on your uniform, take the high road and earn them. The high road is all about doing the right thing and when you do the right thing, you have nothing to worry about.
