My Weekly Reminder
The interesting thing about happiness is that the harder you pursue it, the more it eludes you. Some people think that if they could just have a certain job, car, house or live in a certain neighborhood, they will be happy. Then, when they get these things, they find they’re still unhappy. Probably the biggest myth on the planet is: When I get what I want, I’ll be happy. As former Supreme Court Justice, Hugo Black put it: “It is the paradox of life that the way to miss pleasure is to seek it first. The very first condition to lasting happiness is that a life should be full of purpose, aiming at someting outside one’s self.” In other words, we can’t obtain happiness by chasing after it; it’s a by-product of the things we do for others. And, the easiest thing we can do for others is to brighten their day with a smile, kind comment or letting them know that you appreciate them for who they are and what they do.

Feedback From a Subscriber
I received the following email from a subscriber regarding the Weekly Reminder about why good listeners are so popular:
“Hello Ross,
I have learned a lot from reading your book. It is not easy to remember everything, but this week’s reminder (listening) is an important one. Listening to other people will do more than promoting your popularity or making their day. For example, by letting people talk about issues that are bothering them and being empathic, they feel better and are better able to focus on their work. It also lets them know that they are important, which is essential in retention. Listening is a small thing to do and takes little effort, but it can do a lot for the other person, and the company.
Thank you for your ‘Reminders’. They help me improve myself at both the personal and work level.”
