My Weekly Reminder
When he was CEO of the Chrysler Group, Dieter Zetsche was credited with turning a “stumbling Detroit automaker” completely around. Shortly after he accepted the position to go back to Germany and head up all of DaimlerChrysler, USA Today listed some of the things he did that contributed to his success: “…he had such a ‘regular guy’ image that, he was simply known by his first name to most people.” The article went on to say that, “…he won approval at Chrysler by jumping in instead of standing aloof. He answered all of his email personally. He ate in the regular cafeteria with the lower ranking employees. He attended a union conference shortly after he took over and stayed for hours until he fielded all the questions from wary United Auto Workers members.” The moral to the Dieter Zetsche story is this: When you are a “regular person”–open, honest, approachable, humble and respectful–people will respect you, work hard for you and will see to it that you are incredibly successful. What’s there not to get?
