This week’s Reminder is prompted by an incident I learned of where a father was pushing his child on a swing with one hand while texting on his cell phone with the other. I know that texting and talking on a cell phone can be addictive. I’ve observed people texting at funerals and during church services. I’ve also heard people talking on their cell phone while using the bathroom in the stall next to mine. It’s like some people just can’t let it go. When it comes to family and friends, I think we owe them the courtesy of giving them our full presence while we’re with them—actively listening to what they have to say and so forth. If we can’t do this, then we’re really not much of a friend or parent. So, if you’re playing with your child or visiting with a friend, turn your cell phone off and give them the gift of your presence. You’ll both be glad you did.
Hello Ross,
Thanks for reminding me that the time we give to our children and friends cannot be replaced with unlimited calls, text and data plans!

Dear Martin,
Thank you so much for your excellent comment. What you say is right on the money as they say. Ross
I really like that phrase … “the gift of your presence”, what a tactful way to request that someone put away their phone.
Great column!
Thank you Mary. You made my day.
Ross I love this one. Frequently I’ll see parents on the phone while the kids are in the car with them and think back to some of the great conversations I had with my kids while in the car. What a missed opportunity!
Dear Judy,
Thank you so much for your kind comment. As usual, you are right on the money–missed opportunities!
Ross–Have a very Merry Christman and a happy and prosperous 2012!
Dear Jeff,
