My Weekly Reminder
As I was standing in a check-out line at Target recently, I noticed that the checker was an elderly woman. For a moment, I felt sorry for her for having to work at her age. As she started to check my merchandise, she said in a very upbeat voice: “And how are you doing today?” I answered: “Great, now that I’ve received such a cheerful greeting.” Then I asked how her day was going. She said, “Every day is a great day for me. I was in a coma for three months and they darn near pulled the plug on me. As a result, I’m excited about every breath I get to take.” The lesson that this woman has to teach us is that when we take life for granted, it’s easy to let things get us down and make us crabby. But, when we truly understand how precious life is, all of a sudden we realize how fortunate we are and how much we have to be thankful for. From this point forward, every time I’m tempted to feel down or crabby, I’ll think of this woman.
Footnote: When I got home and shared this experience with my wife and daughter, they both knew exactly who I was talking about because this woman had similarly impacted their lives. It’s truly amazing what one person can do to make the world a better place.
