There are two Fry’s Supermarkets near my home and a vivacious checker named Ghana works at one of them. Whenever my wife and I shop and she’s working, her check-out line is always much longer than any of the others and it’s filled with people who choose to stand in line a little longer in order interact with Ghana. Why? Because Ghana genuinely cares about her customers–she’s always wearing a smile, she knows your name and she knows what’s going on in your life. Furthermore, when she asks a question about you or your family, she actively listens to what you have to say. In short, she treats everyone of her customers like a cherished old friend that she’s known for years. When you’re finished with your Ghana experience, the glow she ignited in you follows you all the way home. Fortunately, the Fry’s management has picked up on the “Ghana phenomenon.” She’s now starring in a television commercial for the Fry’s chain. Furthermore, every time my wife and I see the commercial, we get that glow from Ghana all over again.
The story about Ghana reminds me of my mom. She worked in a grocery store as a checker after she retired and like Ghana, she really got to know her customers and they became her friends. Her line was also the longest because “her customer friends” would be willing to wait for her. Unfortunately, her management wasn’t smart enough to recognize the benefits of this relationship building and focused only on speed and criticized her for her long lines–not understanding why the lines were long. Not surprisingly, that grocery store is no longer in business.
Thank you Charlene for you wondserful comment. That grocery store really missed the point. I hope you have a wonderful day. All the best to you, Ross
That’s why we all like you so much Ross.

We shop where Ghana works and love her! She always greets us by name and just recently when we were standing in line, she came over and had us come to a register were she was working. We were the next in line to be checked out and it would not have been much of a wait. But she noticed, took action and certainly made our day.
We actually prefer to shop at that location and she is part of the reason we do so.
Having been in management for a number of years it is employees like Ghana that make your job easier.
Keep up the good work Ghana!
Hi Betty
