My Weekly Reminder
Recently, John Wooden, former UCLA men’s basketball coach who won ten NCAA championships was interviewed by Fortune magazine on the subject of leadership. When asked where leaders often fall short, he answered: “Many leaders don’t listen and it’s one of the greatest methods we have of learning.” He went on to say that leaders need to listen to those under there supervision as well as those above them. He also pointed out that we need to listen with the idea of understanding what the other person is saying rather than thinking about what we’re going to say next. As American author Ernest Hemmingway put it: “I like to listen. I have learned a great deal from listening carefully. Most people never listen.” So, the next time someone is talking to you, ask yourself, “Am I really listening or am I just waiting for my turn to talk?” If it’s the latter, you’re neither listening nor learning.
