My Weekly Reminder
Not long ago, I attended a meeting where I had to park in a public parking structure. When I arrived, I was issued a ticket by the machine that lets you into the structure. My instructions were to get the ticket “validated” at a particular office so I wouldn’t have to pay for the parking. When my meeting was finished, I walked into this office and said, “Could someone please validate me?” For whatever reason, the receptionist decided to take me literally and said, “Ross, you’re a wonderful person,” as she reached for my ticket. After she validated it, she smiled and told me to have a nice day. “What a wonderful thing,” I thought as I walked to my car feeling really good about myself and about the receptionist. That little gesture took almost no effort on her part and yet it made my day. That got me to thinking. You see, validation of our worth is like food–we all need a steady supply of it in order to function at a high level. In fact, most people are walking around with an invisible sign hanging from their neck that screams: “Please validate me!” So, if you want to improve your effectiveness in dealing with people, consider becoming a “validator.” Make it a point to say or do things that brighten people’s days. If you do, you’ll quickly notice that people will start lining up around you waiting for the opportunity to return the favor in some positive way. This, in turn, puts you in the driver’s seat when it comes to getting things done.
