CareerBuilder recently ran an article in The Arizona Republic that listed some potentially career-damaging phrases to avoid at work. These phrases can make you come across as whiny, immature or haughty and send a clear message that you are not a team player. Some of these phrases are listed below:

  1. “I can’t take on any more work. I’m completely overwhelmed already.”
  2. “Joe is an idiot.”
  3. “That’s not fair!”
  4. “That’s not how we did it at my old company.”
  5. “I’m bored.”

It’s always important to keep in mind that at work, silence can often be golden–especially if it prevents you from uttering one of these image-tarnishing phrases.

  1. What do recommend saying if you ARE already overwhelmed with work, working overtime, and truly can not handle any more? There are plenty of those situations in the workplace. How do you manage expectations?
