Several summers ago, on a whim, my wife and I decided to plant some melons in our vegetable garden since vegetables don’t do well in the Arizona summer heat. We also planted them in the open spaces in our flower gardens. It turned out to be one of the best gardening things we’ve ever done. Almost every day we are surprised by something new that we didn’t see the day before. For example, one of the several varieties of watermelons that we planted is an heirloom variety called Moon and Stars because of the yellow markings on the melon’s skin. We thought that these plants had all been eaten by snails when they were small and tender. Then, several days ago, we went out to look at the garden and two of these melons seemed to appear out of nowhere and they were as large as basketballs! It’s as if some nice fairy or gnome had put them there during then night while we were sleeping. When my wife saw the melons, she was very excited and remarked, “I’m really starting to enjoy gardening again.” I might add that this type of pleasant discovery has been an almost daily occurrence. So, if you want to add some fun and excitement to next year’s summer, plant some melons during next April or May. The experience is full of wonderful surprises and they taste delicious.
Kudos to the Farmers Ross! All I managed to do was to kill a giant Pumpkin. Well maybe the 115 degree helped a little.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the comment. I think the 115 degree heat is touch on most plants. I hope all is well. Ross
How great that is…..enjoy some of that watermelon for me, my all time summer favorite~
