My Weekly Reminder
Over the years, I’ve heard a number of people–business leaders, gurus and the like–say, “Sometimes you have to blow your own horn in order to get noticed.” While true, blowing your own horn can be a dicey proposition. If you call too much attention to yourself or take too much credit for your accomplishments, you run the risk of being seen as self-centered, arrogant and/or competitive. The problem is that no one likes this kind of person. To avoid this, the best way to call attention to your accomplishments is to give away all the credit to those who worked with you. When you do this, those around you will see you as a caring person and a team player–someone they want to work with. Also, the people you give the credit to will feel so good about having worked with you that they will start to enthusiastically blow your horn for you. In other words, blowing other people’s horns is the best way of blowing your own.
