My Weekly Reminder
One of the defining characteristics of great managers is that they spend time outside their office visiting with the people who work for them. These visits are friendly in nature and emphasis is on listening and learning, not pointing out mistakes or heavy-handed problem solving. Great managers also take things a step further by making it a point to act on what they have learned during these visits. This earns them a strong sense of loyalty as well as a high level of trust and repect. As a result, their employees are now in a frame of mind where they are excited about working hard and going the extra mile for their manager i.e., ready to guarantee his or her success. As trivial as this sounds, few managers really listen to their employees and even fewer act on what they learned–which is one of the reasons why there are so few great managers. So, do yourself a favor and get out of your office. Spend 20-30 minutes each day visting with the people who work for you. If you do, the next time your managerial performance is evaluated, you’ll be glad you did.
