My Weekly Reminder
Being nice normally involves brightening people’s days by smiling and saying something positive to them. This puts people in a positive frame of mind which greatly enhances your personal effectiveness. But, if you really want to get the most out of being nice, you need to make sure that your gestures of niceness don’t come across as a monologue; where you smile, say something positive and then move on. Rather, your being nice needs to be a dialogue–a conversation where you create opportunities for you to listen as well as talk. For example, when you ask someone how things are going and they respond with something like “Great” or “Fantastic,” don’t let it end there and move on. Instead, take that extra moment and say something that begs a response like “Oh really” or “Tell me more.” Doing this sends that person a convincing message that that you really to care about them which is a message people absolutely love to hear. Receiving such a message not only brightens their day, but it takes their enthusiasm for going the extra mile for you to the next level. The lesson here is that if you give just a little extra, you’ll get a lot more in return.
