Actor Denzel Washington was the commencement speaker recently at the University of Pennsylvania. He had the following advice for the graduating class: “I’ve found that nothing in life is worthwhile unless you take risks. Nothing. Nelson Mandela said, ‘There is no passion to be found in playing small – in settling for a life that’s less than what your capable of living.'” Mr. Washington is right. Yes, taking a risk can have some pain and stress associated with it, but it also leads to learning, growth, success and confidence. These are things that make life fun and exciting. Think about Mr. Washington’s words the next time your find yourself waffling on a decision to take a risk.
Excellent advice from Mr. Washington. Thank you for passing it along.
Thanks, Marcia. It’s always nice to hear from you. Ross
Ross, spot on! Anyone in sales knows that you frequently have to rely on others to deliver what you sell. You have to have faith in your team and your own ability to execute. As a manager, it’s important to remember that we want our people to take risks and push the envelope. It’s how we react when something goes wrong that creates the environment that leads to the growth and learning you mention. Hold your people to high standards to be smart when taking risks, but don’t hammer them when they go out on a limb for a customer, have some challenges, and need support.
Dear Gary,
Thanks for the comment. I hope all is well. Say Hi to Pam.
