My Weekly Reminder

Saying “thank you” to someone for a job well done or paying them a compliment energizes that person which, in turn, makes you a more effective team leader, supervisor or manager.  While we all know that we should make these positive connections on a regular basis, often times we get so caught in what we’re doing that we forget.  This week, while reading a book titled, Hug Your People, by Jack Mitchell, I came across a brilliant system for reminding us to do these little things that make a big difference.  Each morning, this person would put ten pennies in his left pocket.  Each time he thanked someone or complimented them, he would move one of the pennies over to the right pocket.  When he emptied his pockets at night, his goal was that all ten of the pennies will have traveled to the right pocket.  That way he made sure that he made at leasts ten positive connections every day.

Feedback From A Subscriber

This past week I received the following email from a subscriber regarding the Reminder about giving instead of taking:

“Ross,

As an admittedly compulsive giver, I have to admit that I am terrible at receiving and oftentimes shy away from that very important aspect.  I think that receiving is an offset of giving–that we need to know how to receive in order to appreciate how capable we are at giving.”
