My Weekly Reminder
I had just boarded my connecting flight and was headed home. As I settled into my seat, I looked up and saw a famous business author/guru and his wife board the plane. The two had not been seated together, so the guru asked the gentleman across the aisle if he would trade seats with his wife so they could sit together. When the gentleman said that he preferred his current seat, the guru became combative and insisted the gentleman change seats. Eventually, the gentleman agreed and the guru and his wife were able to sit together. As he was sitting down, the guru looked my way and I glared at him in disapproval. A few minutes later, he got up and apologized to the gentleman whom he had just bullied. He then asked for his business card and promised to send gentleman copies of each of his books. He then looked back at me, smiled sheepishly and sat down. I think nearly everyone on the plane knew who this man was and they were all disappointed by what they had just observed. He had written several books on the importance of treating people with dignity and respect, but with one brief incident, he showed us he was a fraud. As a result, I never bought another one of his books and I’m sure others on the plane did the same. The lesson here is always conduct your affairs as if someone important is watching, because they probably are.
