I received a number of insightful comments from subscribers regarding last week’s Reminder about the retired elementary school principal who felt that since she no longer held a position of status, she was no longer relevant. These comments are so good that I feel compelled to share them with you:
“Your writing really opened my eyes quickly. How I have seen this in so many retired people including members of my family. You must have a purpose ever day when you put your feet on the floor regardless of your age.”
“This is truly sad. Sounds as if she is having trouble settling with retirement status. She needs to volunteer or become involved with other activities she missed out on while she was working. I keep moving everyday even though my body is complaining. Arthritis is not kind.”
“This story reminded me of the importance of ‘to be’ rather than ‘to have.’ When a person is in the ‘to have’ state, the moment that person loses what he or she had whether it was a position, a title, money, etc., it might feel to that person like they are losing their entire identity. On the contrary, if we learn to constantly live in the ‘to be’ state, no outside factor can change our core!”
