A friend of mine named Bob shared a story where he brightened another person’s day without saying a word. According to Bob, “I was driving north on McClintock Drive when I stopped for the red light at Southern Avenue. Next to me was a guy on a beautiful yellow Harley. I gave a quick beep on the horn. When the guy looked at me, I pointed to his bike and gave him a thumbs up. By his smile and response, I could tell that I at least brightened his day.” What Bob didn’t say was that the smile he received in return for his thumbs up gesture brightened his day as well. There are other things we can do to brighten other people’s days without saying anything. For example, smiling pleasantly while you let another motorist cut in front of you, opening a door for someone, waving to a friend you meet on the sidewalk, patting someone on the shoulder when they’re having a bad day or giving a wordless hug to someone who is grieving. As was the case with Bob, these gestures will brighten your day as well.
