A friend of mine shared a story where he brightened another person’s day without saying a word. “I was driving along a busy street when I stopped for red light. Next to me was a guy on a beautiful shiny new Harley. I gave a quick beep on the horn. When the guy looked at me, I pointed to his bike and gave him a thumbs up. By his smile and response, I could tell that I had brightened his day.” What my friend didn’t say was that the smile he received in return for his thumbs up gesture brightened his day as well. There are lots of things we can do to brighten other people’s days without saying anything. For example, smiling pleasantly while you let another motorist cut in front of you, opening a door for someone, waving to a friend you meet on the sidewalk, patting someone on the shoulder when they’re having a bad day or giving a wordless hug to someone who is grieving. As was the case with my friend, these gestures will brighten your day as well.
