… they started a Grilling Club.

Many math, science and engineering types see themselves a lacking in the social skills necessary to advance their careers. Making friends and connecting with others does not come easy to them. An article by Anita Bruzzese which appeared in a recent issue of The Arizona Republic presented a novel way that a group of math, science and engineering students a Kettering University developed to overcome this difficulty–they started a Grilling Club.

According to the article, every Thursday evening, this group of students gets together and cooks dinner on a grill on campus. “This gives the students a chance to interact with others while comfortably focused on grilling.” What a fantastic idea. While they’re cooking dinner on the grill, the networking takes care of itself. So, if you’re feeling uncomfortable when it comes to making new friends or connecting with others, join a club that you have an interest in–or start one.

  1. Ross, what a great idea. Not that I’m shy or anything, but who doesn’t love a cookout? Of course I didn’t have the grades to join the math or engineering cookouts 🙂 A strong network is invaluable and like most things that are worthwhile, it takes constant care and feeding. Thanks for reminding me that it’s OK to mix some business with pleasure. Cheers, gm
