My Weekly Reminder
USA Today recently ran a feature article on the New York Giants football team. For the past three years, the team has been characterized by in-fighting, bickering and losing. This year the team has come together and now it’s winning–sometimes big. The article goes on to say that the cause of this amazing turnaround was simply a change in the behavior of head coach Tom Coughlin. According to linebacker Antonio Pierce, conversations with the coach use to be uncomfortable. “His door was open and he’d hear what you’d say, but he didn’t listen.” Today, it’s completely the opposite. The coach takes the time to talk to the players and get to know them better. As center Shaun O’hara puts it, “He knows us better and we know him better. That familiarity has resulted in trust.” In-fighting and bickering have been replaced with teamwork and winning–the Giants are now a fun team to play for. The lesson here is simple: Get to know the people who stand between you and success or failure, let them get to know you, listen to what they have to say and, in return, they’ll see to it that you become a winner. It doesn’t get any more basic than that.
