I read an article recently about a very successful hamburger chain called Five Guys. It opened 25 years ago with one store and today is has more than 1,000. The chain’s strategy for success is simple: serve a good product at a reasonable price and have a clean and friendly atmosphere. In addition, treat your employees well and pay them well. As a result, business is booming and the chain doesn’t advertise. The article referred to Five Guys’ strategy as being innovative and unique. It’s actually neither; it’s the straightforward application of common sense. This strategy has been around forever and it will make any business successful. The head-scratching question we have to ask ourselves is, “Why don’t more businesses adopt this strategy?”
Hi Ross,
Here’s the secret: Five Guys kick-ass fries!
Hope all is well!
Dear Barb,
So sorry that I haven’t gotten back with you for commenting on my Weekly Reminder. It’s always wonderful to hear from you and I hope you’re still enjoying those Five Guys “kick ass” fries. I hope all is well with you and that you have a wonderful 2013. Who knows? Maybe our paths will cross again soon.
Hi Ross,
Another business that treats their employees well and pays them well is Costco. They have name brand “bulk” products at reduced prices from their competitors. It is quickly becoming the only place I go to purchase all the household basics. I like businesses that treat both their customers AND employees well. Customers know when a business is not giving an honest effort to giving a little back to their community and employees. Thanks for another great article. -Tom
Dear Tom
I hope all is going well with you. I’m sorry that I didn’t get back to you after you commented on my October 2 Weekly Reminder. I was finishing up a new book and it was consuming me. That’s now excuse for not staying in touch, but that’s what happened. I hope you have a great 2013. All the best to you, Ross
Hi Ross,
My local Five Guys branch near the office in Montreal ie always packed with teenagers to white collar executives. I love their brand and food. Makes me think of IKEA and their mission to create a better everyday life for the majority of people.
All the best
Martin
