There are still a large number of people in business who think that fun is the opposite of work and has no place in the workplace. In reality, work and fun can be the same thing and when work becomes fun, a business thrives in terms of profitability, growth, innovation, the level of customer service employees give customers as well as customer and employee loyalty. In addition, when work becomes fun, employees look forward to coming to work every day which means absenteeism and turnover become things of the past. About six months ago, I observed a small business that was bought by a person who thought fun was the opposite of work. After a month one of the long term employees approached the new owner and said, “Working here isn’t fun anymore.” The new owner responded with, “This is not supposed to be fun, this is about work and work is serious business.” Now, five months later, this company has gone out of business mainly because the employees no longer liked working there which led to poorer products and customers service. This, in turn, led to customers no longer wanting to do business with that company. Once again, employees’ having fun is a key to the success of any business.
