Unforeseen circumstances that life sometimes throws at us can derail our best laid plans. When this happens we can either choose to make the best of the situation or we can play the victim and feel sorry for ourselves. This is where the expression, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” comes from. Recently, a long time married couple who are semi-retired decided to spend the summer in San Diego where they have a condo. The plan was to play lots of golf and enjoy the perfect weather and everything else that San Diego has to offer. Within two weeks after they arrived, the husband was hit by a car which resulted in a broken foot. As a result, he’ll be recuperating in a cast most of the summer. That means no golf and little, if any, time at the beach. Their challenge now is do they let this unfortunate incident ruin their summer or do they turn it into lemonade? Knowing these people, I suspect they will find numerous ways to turn their summer into lemonade and it will be very sweet lemonade at that.
Great thoughts Ross. I am sure this couple will be encouraged when they read this! Dottie
Do you really think so? All the best, Ross
Some ideas that come to mind are to share opportunities, not misfortunes with others, and I’m sure in the San Diego area there are individuals or couples who, due to “other fateful circumstances,” have time to golf but do not have the funds to do so, or are not a member of a country club or even have a guest connection.
These days we think of .org as helping the homeless, or those with the greatest misfortunes. Through .org we can share opportunities to give of ourselves, share employment, educational, business or even recreational opportunities in “sickness and in health.”
While we are living, we should be sharing for the very reason that even at a funeral, the whole emphasis is on the memories of a person while they were living, and the lemonade stands we set up even as far back as our very own childhoods.
