Serendipity is the accidental discovery of something wonderful while you’re searching for something else. I remember once searching through a set of files looking for a particular letter and found a check for $1,200 that I had long forgotten about—I was ecstatic. Recently, a group of researchers that included author Clive Custler, were searching for the remnants of a passenger plane that crashed into Lake Michigan in 1950. What they found instead was the wreck of a 60 foot single-masted ship that had sunk in the 1830s. The vessel is sitting upright and is in fairly good condition—a very exciting discovery. As one of the researchers commented, “Sometime when you’re looking for one thing, you come across another.” Serendipity is life’s way of rewarding people who put time and energy into searching for things. So, if you want to experience serendipity, you have to do a little searching.
Dear Ross: I am just getting over strep throat so I am not searching for something or maybe I am–searching for getting over this awful stuff!!!! I love it when I am looking for something and find something else. Happens a lot these days. Ann
Dear Ann,
I hope your feeling better. Thank you for your kind an humorous comment. Ross
Dear Ross,
I read the same article in the Chicago Tribune last week! If you want to know more about Clive Cussler’s “day job”, look up http://www.numa.net. He is not an attention seeker. When he discovers stuff, he usually tells the local historical group what he found and leaves. In his books, NUMA is also the name of the underwater diving organization that Dirk Pitt is the head of.
Hope Marcia is doing better. Losing a cat friend is losing a friend.
Take care.
Your adoring cousin,
Carol
Dear Carol,
Thanks for the info on Clive Custler. It’s always great to hear from you. Ross
Your mom was the champion or serendipity. She always had such a great attitude about life.
