My Weekly Reminder
Managing By Wandering Around, or MBWA, is the practice of putting a smile on your face and casually circulating among your employees for the sole purpose of visitng with them. Emphasis during these informal visits is on showing an interest in your employees and listening to what they have to say; not looking over their shoulders and pointing out mistakes. Doing this on a regular basis greatly enhances your effectiveness as a manager because it sends out so many positive messages that employees are dying to hear: First of all, the fact that you’re even doing this tells them that you’re accessable, approachable and that you think each person is important. Second, your willingness to listen to what they have to say tells them you’re real and that you care about them. This is the kind of boss everyone wants to work for and the kind of work environment where employees get excited about applying their best efforts toward perfoming their jobs. If you aren’t already doing this, try it for a week and watch what happens. You’ll be amazed at the results.

Feedback From a Subscriber
This past week I received the following email regarding last week’s Reminder about the secret to being an effective boss:
“Hi Ross,
Thanks for the weekly reminder regarding the boss treating his/her people ‘right’, and the consequences if they don’t. What came to my mind is that if employees interact and correspond to people from other companies (ie Clients), the employees do themselves no favour by slacking off or taking other actions to express their unhappiness. Their behaviour may affect how clients think of them, as they are their clients’ contact. Also, by being responsible and accountable for their work, they can find another job with one of their customers.
You may make your boss look bad, but don’t bring yourself down with him.“
