My Weekly Reminder
One thing that highly successful athletic coaches have in common is that they are able to keep people and problems separate. These coaches are tough on performance, but they treat their players with kindness and respect. As a result, their players love them to death because they know their coach is looking out for each player’s best interest. This same philosophy carries over to solving problems with coworkers. Attack a problem with all the passion and vigor you want, but don’t attack the person you’re working with. Instead, treat that person with kindness and respect by listening to what they have to say and trying to see things from their point of view. If you do this, you will find that the process will go much faster and the solution you come up with will be far better for everyone.

This past week, I received the following email from a subscriber:
“Dear Ross,
I loved last week’s Reminder about separating people from problems. It’s a difficult thing to do, but if you can discipline yourself to do it, the payoff is huge.”
