My Weekly Reminder
Research has shown that what people want most in a boss is a nice person who says “thank you” a lot. A recent study reported in the Harvard Business Review found that being likeable–making those around you feel good about themselves–is more important to your success than how competent you are. A similar study reported in the Wall Street Journal found that being a nice approachable person who listens, goes hand in hand with being a highly successful manager. Another study revealed tha nine out of ten employees feel underappreciated. Their attitude was “why work hard if no one cares?” So, if you want to improve your effectiveness as a manager remember what being nice and saying “thank you” will do for you. Let the people who work for you know that you truly appreciate them for who they are and what they do. If you do this consistently, you will not only become a more effective manager, but you’ll enjoy going to work much more as well.
