A friend of mine posted the following excellent quote from author Simon Sinek on Facebook: “A true leader would sacrifice the numbers to save the people, not sacrifice the people to save the numbers.” “The numbers” is a phrase that refers to the measures of success of a business—things like profitability, productivity, costs and so forth. True leaders understand that it’s the people (employees) who drive these numbers and it’s their job to look take care of those number drivers. This is the philosophy that leaders at Google use to operate their company. Their commitment to this philosophy has not only made Google incredibly profitable over the years, but it has also been rated as “the most innovative company in the world” by Fast Company Magazine and been ranked number one for the last four years in a row on The Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work for list. These are the kinds of things that happen when the leadership of a business gets things right. It’s too bad the leadership of more businesses don’t try to emulate Google’s example.
